Where Has Rohan Been For The Past 8 Months? Playing to Presidents & other Decent Folk!

Yup, that's me!

Yup, that’s me!

Hi guys, Rohan here. I’ve been absent from the blogging world for a long time, as many of you would have noticed. The reason for this was that my music career took off in a big way, and it’s been hard to find the time to write anything other than songs and emails!

In this post I hope to give you a quick idea of the events of the past 9 months, and how radically things have changed (for the better I might say). Also in this post I will outline my future plans for Rohan 7 Things.

dublin city rounders dublin goest country ok corral busking trailSo first thing first, for those who don’t know my band is called The Dublin City Rounders. It’s a duo. I play electric guitar and sing, and my brother Al plays the upright bass, banjo and sings as well. We play rootsy music, everything from Nashville style country to rock n roll, cow-punk, ragtimes, bluegrass and hillbilly silliness. I wear full western gear, from hat to boots, it’s been a fascination of mine since I joined Jimmy Willing’s Real Gone Hickups at 16. Al is a Gothic rocker, an Edwardian, denim, steam-punk horror dude.

dublin city rounders irish times garth brooksWe played our first show at the KC Peaches Wine Cave in Dublin in January 2014, and on the 16th of September we will play our 100th gig, this time at Whelans for our new album, “Decent Folk”‘s, launch. It’s been a crazy ride, from dizzying highs such as sharing the stage with Grammy Award Winning Nashville legend Jim Lauderdale and performing for the President of Ireland, his wife and about 400 guests at the Presidential residence. Or being featured in the nation news papers, and national radio, or being given the hat that was to presented to Garth Brooks, when his shows we cancelled.

I’ve learned so much. So much about business, about art, about performance, about health, about mentality, about success. And I hope to share that with you all over the coming weeks and months. From now and for the foreseeable future I will be wring a post per week on what I’ve learned. Some posts will be specifically for those in the world or art and music, but most will be applicable to anyone trying to achieve something. I will also continue to post guest blogs so if you’re interested in submitting a pot just get in touch ;)

Guest Post: Four Uncommon Healthy Recipes for Your Diet!

Hey guys!! Well July was just crazy, between playing for the Irish President at his home, recording a new album and playing up to 4 shows in a single day, I didn’t have much time for blogging. That will all change next week with a big recap post, but for now let’s take a look a few nice recipes, that are also nutritious and healthy! Take it away Maria :)

Four Uncommon Healthy Recipes for your Diet

This entry is a guest post by Maria Trenda, a registered dietitian and a writer. She blogs as a contributor at Mindbodygreen.com and Healthdaddy.org about health, fitness and nutrition.

These recipes have the ability to make you feel full while giving you healthy nutrition, and a melange of vitamins and minerals.

Fresh Carrot Salad with Dates and Pistachios

This salad is great because it is so filling. The sweetness and the spice make for an unusual combination.

1 lb. carrots

3 Tbsp. Virgin olive oil

1 tsp. whole cumin seeds

1 tsp. paprika; sweet, hot or smoked

1 tsp. honey

4 dates, pitted and chopped

2 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice

1/3 cup shelled pistachios (walnuts and almonds work as well)

½ tsp. salt

1 Tbsp. fresh mint

In a small skillet heat the oil and roast the cumin seeds until they turn a shade darker.

Remove from heat and add paprika and honey. Let it cool to room temperature.

Coarsely grate the carrots.

In a bowl, toss the carrots with the cooled cumin/honey mixture. Add dates, lemon juice, nuts and salt. Use your hands the mix it all together.

Just before serving add the mint into the mix.

Sweet Potato Salad

Untitled-1 2

This can be served as an appetizer or as a side dish with meat or chicken. It is sweet and sour and has an unusual color.

4 large sweet potatoes

4 Tbsp. Olive oil

¼ cup red wine or sherry vinegar

1 Red Bell Pepper, cut into quarters

2 tsp. cumin

1 Tbsp. orange zest (optional)

½ cup sliced scallions

½ cup fresh mint or parsley

1 fresh jalapeno pepper

1 Tbsp. orange zest

¼ cup raisins (optional)

Preheat oven to 400°. Peel the potatoes, cut into bite size pieces. Put on a baking sheet in a single layer and brush with olive oil to coat. Sprinkle salt and pepper and roast turning occasionally for about 30 minutes, or until brown from all sides and soft inside.

In a blender put the remaining oil, vinegar, bell pepper, cumin and zest. Add salt and pepper and puree until smooth.

Toss the warm potatoes with scallions, mint, chilies and raisins and add the dressing, toss to coat.

Eggs in Purgatory

Untitled-1 4

This dish is great for breakfast (In the Middle East this dish is called Shakshuka) or for a light dinner. Since the new advice is to have a few eggs a week, this is a great recipe that does not use a lot of oil. The egg is known as a ‘feel full’ food.

You can use any leftover tomato sauce or spaghetti sauce. Making it by yourself (as opposed to buying it in a jar) will ensure that you have only healthy ingredients.

Tomato sauce

1 Tbsp. olive oil

1 medium size onion

3-4 cloves of garlic

4 medium size tomatoes, belched and skin removed

2 Tbsp. crushed red pepper

Salt, pepper, and a pinch of sugar.

Heat olive oil in a large skillet, add onions and cook until they become translucent.

Add garlic and crushed red pepper and fry for 5 more minutes, stirring occasionally.

Cut tomatoes into medium pieces and add to the skillet. Add salt and sugar.

Cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes.

When the sauce is ready, make little depressions in the sauce with a spoon and break an egg into each of them. 1 egg per person. Cook for the hardiness desired.

With Shakshuka, traditionally your start with onions and red bel pepper. If you would like it spicier add chili peppers as well.

Serves 4

4 Chicken breasts

½ cup all-purpose flour

2 Tbsp. butter

1 tsp. olive oil

¼ cup fresh lemon juice

¼ cup dry white wine

3 Tbsp. capers, drained and rinsed

Salt & pepper

Flatten the chicken breasts. Put them between two sheets of plastic wrap and pound with a heavy object, working from the center to the edges.

Combine flour, salt and pepper. Roll the flattened breasts in the mixture to coat.

In a large skillet, melt butter and olive oil and add floured chicken.Cook 3 to 5 minutes on each side until tender. Remove from heat and set aside.

In the same skillet pour lemon juice, wine and capers. Scrape the bottom of the skillet to release all the brown bits. Reduce liquids by boiling an additional 5 minutes.

Guest Post: An in-depth question answer session with your Rheumatologist is a must for your recovery!

Hey guys!! Here’s another interesting guest post for those suffering rheumatism, or those who know someone with the issue. Some very good advice here from Ashley Jone, and as always be sure to cross check any advice, and never be afraid to get a second opinion! Enjoy :)

An in-depth question answer session with your Rheumatologist is a must for your recovery!

rheumatismRheumatoid arthritis is an ailment affecting millions of people across the globe. The cause of this ailment is still unknown although researches are going on different parts of the world to come up with the possible cause. Some are of the opinion that it may be a hereditary disease and can successfully pass down from one generation to another. Although one can pinpoint the cause but yes it is true that one experiences inflammation in the joints and occasionally other tissues of the body.

As part of the research work, many scientists claim that the environment also plays a significant role in triggering Rheumatoid arthritis. Say for example: one can suffer from this ailment if they are exposed to silica mineral, chronic periodontal disease or even if the patient is a chain smoker. All this can lead to the growth of the pain in the joints.

Now the question arises how one gets relief from the pain and inflammation. It is suggested that the moment one experiences the pain they should visit the doctor and on his recommendation visit the rheumatologist. This doctor specializes in arthritis and similar related ailments. Generally it is seen that one does not visit a rheumatologist on their own. They do so when they are recommended by the primary care physician.

When you are visit a rheumatologist be prepared of the questions that he will ask you. The more in-depth answer you provide him with, the better he will be able to advise and guide you. Some of the common questions asked by the doctor:

  • Where does it hurt? Is it the entire joint or any particular area?
  • For how long are you experiencing the pain?
  • Is there any specific time when you feel the pain or is the pain there all the time?
  • What kind of pain is it? Sharp, tingling or a dull, numb one?
  • For how long does the pain last? 5 minutes, 10 minutes?
  • Have you experienced any kind of redness or swelling?
  • Does the pain affect your daily tasks? Does it hinder your daily activities?
  • Have you injured yourself in the corned joint? i.e. any kind of accident?
  • Do your symptoms affect your ability to perform any daily tasks?
  • Are you the first person in the family who has experienced this? Did your parents suffer from any such pain?

Rheumatism1Try to provide an accurate answer to almost all the questions. Your answers will play a significant role. In fact at times it may happen that you would like to ask some questions to the doctor. If so, then don’t hesitate. Go ahead and ask the questions. As a patient you have the full right to know what you are suffering from. Some of the common questions that you should ask include:

  • Do I have arthritis? What type of arthritis is it?
  • What is the treatment for the pain? How long will it continue?
  • When should you visit next?
  • What medication is prescribed and what is its role?
  • Is there any blood test that you need to undergo?
  • What about exercise, weight control, diet?

Try and follow what the doctor says. If you are required to follow any specific diet then do so. Don’t forget that your health is in your own hands. If you avoid the signs and don’t bother to listen to what the doctor advises then at the end of the day it is you who is going to suffer.

Guest Post: How to Diet on a Budget Paleo Style!

Hey guys! I’d like to welcome today a new guest posters! Introducing Cristina Beltran who’s here to share a little wisdom on paleo dieting for those on a budget :) Enjoy!

How to Diet on a Budget Paleo Style

Paleo-Diet-Recipe-Primal-The-Top-Ten-Foods-10Eating the healthiest and freshest food does not mean having to spend loads of money to maintain a hale and hearty lifestyle. Eating healthy does not equate to a more costly way of life. In fact, it’s the opposite. The more healthy foods you go for, the less you’ll have to spend. One way of doing this keeping a healthy Paleo lifestyle on a budget. How can you do the Paleo diet on a budget? But first, what is the Paleo diet?

The Paleo diet, short for Paleolithic diet, is based on how Paleolithic men or “cavemen” ate in the earliest days. It’s basically eating the same food our ancestors did, which consisted of fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, and so much more. Say goodbye to foods with refined sugar, grains, dairy and legumes. You need to discard mistakenly healthy foods like frozen yogurt, fruit juice, canned goods and even yummy rice cakes from your current diet. After eliminating sugars, sodium, preservatives, colouring, and artificial flavouring with the Paleo diet, you remove toxins from and add more nutrients to your body. You also lose weight the healthy way and increase your muscle growth. Just don’t forget to have an active lifestyle, too. Other benefits of the diet are improved mood or attitude, higher immune function, and lowered risk of heart disease.

To experience all the benefits of a regular Paleo diet without breaking the bank, here are some money-saving tips for you.

  • Purchase the freshest ingredients and cook it yourself.

Instead of buying pre-packaged Paleo meals and snacks, it’s better to prepare the meals from scratch. Not only does it save you more money, cooking the food yourself ensures it is free from hidden sugars or preservatives.

  • Buy in bulk.

This money-saving tip applies to other things but it also proves to be efficient in a Paleo diet. Buying in bulk significantly reduces food expenses. Olive oil and meat bought direct from the farmer may be bought in bulk. Make sure the meat is stored and fits well in a chest freezer to avoid immediate spoilage.

  • Start eating organ meat.

Muscle meat is more expensive than organ meat such as the liver, brain, or kidneys. Why not eat organ meat twice or thrice a week? It may be cheaper but it is full of vitamins and nutrients befitting in a healthy Paleo diet. Learn different cooking techniques so dishes with organ meat end up as delicious, if not more than, as dishes with muscle meat.

  • Buy in season from the local market.

Don’t buy fruits or vegetables that are not in season. Don’t look for ingredients that are not in season since it can cost you more. Ask your local farmer which fruits and vegetables are cheaper and with a lot of stock. You can still bargain for a special or lower price in case there is a surge of certain produce that sellers are willing to lower the price to be able to sell more.

Guest Post: The Voice That Transcended Time, Language and Religion – Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan!

Hey guys!! Here’s a timely guest post. I’m currently recording the first all originals album with The Dublin City Rounders titled “Decent Folk” (sounding awesome by the way!). So here’s a post about one of the greatest voices ever by guest contributor Ali Jan Qadir. Well worth a read! Oh and by the way, he has the same birthday as me ;) Enjoy!!

“There are great singers, and then there are those few voices that transcend time. The late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan could not only transcend time, but also language and religion. There was magic when he opened his mouth, a sense of holy ecstasy that was exciting and emotional. It wasn’t uncommon even for Western listeners, who didn’t understand a word he was singing or follow his Sufi traditions, to be moved to tears upon hearing him.”

—Chris Nickson

nusrat_fateh_ali_khan-73276afde93d45a334f1445796ca43c697064de5-s51“The king of the kings of Qawwali” as they would call him, was born on 13th october 1948 in Lyallpur, Pakistan. Nusrat Fateh Ali khan belonged to family of Qawwali singers, a devotional form of music of the sufis. He got his training from his father and extended the family’s over 600 year tradition of Qawwali singing. He publicly performed for the first time on his father’s chehlum in 1966 and quickly became famous all over the world by the early 70’s. Nusrat Fateh Ali khan was truly gifted with an extraordinary range of vocal abilities and a voice that has never ended to amaze his audience. He is known as one the best voices ever recorded, an eternal voice that will stun the world forever. Sadly enough, the world lost him on 16th August 1997 due to kidney and liver failure proceeding to cardiac arrest in London.

Soon after he began singing Qawwali, he was invited to different countries for music scores and albums including USA, Japan, India and Europe. He performed in over 40 countries and was renowned for his strength of performing devotionally for hours and that also with immense intensity. Not just himself, but even the crowd listening to him live used to get lost in the whirls of his singing. Many of these people never understood a word in his lyrics being of a foreign language but still the cast of his spell was equally magical for all. None could deny the dedication he had towards music. Jeff Buckley says “He’s my elvis. I idolize Nusrat, he’s a god, too.”

He collaborated with many of the singers and composers around the world and experimented his skills in many different composings, never failing to give a hit. Some of his foreign work includes The Last temptation of Christ with Peter Gabriel, album Mustt Mustt and Night song with Michael Brook, soundtracks for Dead Man walking, Natural Born Killers, Any Given Sunday, Eat Pray Love and composition of music for Bandit Queen. His work in India includes music for Aur Pyaar hogya, Kachhe Dhaage, Dillagi and Dharkan just before his death among which, some were released after his death in 1999.

Nusrat_Fateh_Ali_Khan_2His Live concerts were released in a number of albums around the globe and still are best-sellers to this time because of the fact that he was one of his kind when it came to performing live. The enthusiasm and passion that he put forward in his performances, never tiring strength in his vocals, his intense spiritual charisma and extraordinary exuberance was mind blowing, a kind never heard before him and never will after him.

His powerful vocals that could perform for over 10 hours continuously gave birth to a craze in europe for his live Qawwali performances. He was the first qawwal to popularize this form of music with such huge success. Alexandra A.Seno wrote:

“Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s voice was otherworldly. For 25 years, his mystical songs transfixed millions. It was not long enough …. He performed qawali, which means wise or philosophical utterance, as nobody else of his generation did. His vocal range, talent for improvisation and sheer intensity were unsurpassed.”

The deep spiritual world that lied in his music was undeniable. As many of the famous singers proclaimed about it in their words as follows:

“Nusrat is one of the greatest singers of our time. When his singing takes off, his voice embodies soulfulness and spirituality like no other.”

-Peter Gabriel

“Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan A Living Legend His voice was a conduit to heaven.”

-Aryn Baker

“Working with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was the closest I got to god.”

-Sekhar Kapoor

Singing like his is only born when the complete soul is dedicated to music and is raised like child with eternal love that not many have to offer. He went as far as he could with his passion of music and its true, his passion had no limits. A singing as free as his stays alive forever and a legend like him never dies.

Guest Post: Removing Bad Freezer Odour From Ice Cubes!

Hey guys! Well I recently did my 50th show in 2014 with my band The Dublin City Rounders, we’re up to 56 now! It’s been a pretty phenominal year and I can’t wait to have the time to write about everything that’s happened :) For now though here’s some more sound advice from regular contributor Silvia Marks, enjoy!!

Removing Bad Freezer Odour From Ice Cubes!

ice_cubes_openphotoThe kitchen is the place where you spend a great amount of your time preparing the dinner, doing the dishes or just tidying up. However, all too often we underestimate the importance of the kitchen appliances and to be more precise – their proper functioning. There is no kitchen that doesn’t have an oven, a microwave, a washing or a dishwasher. Don’t you think that we have missed anything? Yes we have. One of the must – have appliances – the fridge. You have probably never given it much thought but the fridge and the freezer are a huge help in keeping the food edible. Nowadays we can not imagine a kitchen without a fridge . Let’s take a closer look to the freezer though.
During cleaning activities, it is a commonly neglected area and as a matter of fact that’s the main reason for the unpleasant smell the ice cubes have when you take them out of the freezer. Their bad odour can ruin every party and make the taste of any drink terrible. There are some proven tricks for getting rid of the smell but the truth is that there is one golden rule and it is called “Regular defrosting and cleaning”. Let’s get started:

• If you open the freezer and see some ice cream leftovers, left there the last summer or frozen vegetables you had never got the chance to cook, don’t be surprised if the ice cubes smell bad. The most sensible thing you can do is to defrost the fridge, throw all the unnecessary food away and do your best to remove the nasty odour from the ice trays by using appropriate home made detergents. What you need is baking soda, warm water and mild soap. Scrub the ice trays vigorously, rinse and allow some time for drying. Exposing them to direct sunlight before putting them back into the freezer is recommended. A mixture of lukewarm water and white vinegar would do an excellent job as well.

ice-cubes• If you are not a fan of the home made cleaning supplies, you can opt for a freezer cleaning detergent but you have to read the labels carefully. It is a well known fact that the ones, containing charcoal are the most efficient as the charcoal is a natural odour neutraliser.

• As you have already assumed, having a clean ice tray is the key for getting rid of the smelly ice cubes. Another effortless and yet extremely effective method for dealing with the ice tray odour is wrapping it up in a newspaper. Place in in a cool, dry place for 24 hours.

• For future reference, you can place and open package of baking soda into the freezer and the bad smell will be kept to the minimum.

• Check the quality of your tap water before taking any cleaning actions. If the running water smells strange, don’t expect to get odour – free ice cubes. If your tap water contains lots of minerals, you’d better use distilled water for making ice. There is one more thing that is worthy of mentioning – don’t use ice cubes older than two weeks.

SpaklingCarpets suggest to remember to clean the freezer on regular basis. Your efforts will definitely pay off. The timely cleaning will have a positive impact not only on the ice cubes odour elimination but on all the food stored in the fridge. It doesn’t matter which one of the methods, mentioned above, you choose. What is important is the result achieved. The freezer odours can be really stubborn but if you use a creative approach, your success is guaranteed.
